Stack of Fives is a photographic exploration of story-telling, in which artists are prompted to push the boundaries of their creative process. What if a writer’s only tool for creation was a drum set? What if the drummer was forced to express himself using a paint brush? What if the painter used actors as colors and the stage as a canvas? The musician expresses life with sound, the dancer with movement, the sculptor with shapes and the writer with words. Every artist employs a unique vocabulary and set of tools to share their story. These tools define their voice and in turn, their voice defines them. But what happens when artists, from varying disciplines, are forced to tell a story with the tools of a medium they aren’t trained in? This is the question Stack of Fives explores.

Back in 2012, Stack of Fives partnered with MassBliss and asked 15 artists from different fields, ranging from theatre directors to graffiti artists, to tell a story through a simple format imposed to them: 1 panoramic photograph composed of 5 photographs of the same person or group of people, merged together into a single landscape. The result, a collection of large-scale photographs that approach story-telling in new and unexpected ways, was unveiled at the Stack of Fives World Premiere Exhibition in December 2014, accompanied by an original performance piece based on the stories told in the photographs.
